Sea Lamprey

Petromyzon marinus

The invasion of the parasitic sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus (shown attached to a lake trout in the photo) led to the collapse of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush populations in the Great Lakes during the mid-20th century. It also contributed to the extirpation of the shortjaw cisco Coregonus zenithicus and the extinctions of three endemic fishes: the deepwater cisco C. johannae, the blackfin cisco C. nigripinnis, and the shortnose cisco C. reighardi.
