(Closed on public holidays, and on Fridays during the summer months)

provision for parking or wheelchair access.
Group visits.
The Museum encourages visits by groups from primary and secondary schools,
CEGEPs and other institutions and organizations. It is necessary to reserve
a date and time for your group, because we accept only two groups per day
to avoid overcrowding. To make a reservation, call 398-4086 ext.4092 Monday
through Friday between 9:00 and 5:00. It is advisable to reserve a date
well in advance. To defray our expenses, there is a contribution of $1 per
visitor for organized groups, of which half is payable in advance.
How to enjoy your visit.
The Redpath Museum is a public place for quiet study and observation where
specimens and artefacts are preserved, exhibited and available for consultation.
The Museum is also a teaching and research institution; laboratories, storage
areas and offices are not open to the public. We welcome individuals and
groups to the Museum, and do our best to make a visit to the Museum as interesting
and enjoyable as possible. Because the Museum is a small and sensitive area
that supports teaching and research as well as public education, we have
drawn up a set of guidelines to allow all our multifarious activities to
flourish side by side.
Visitors please remember:
Please use, but also respect, the Museum.
Enjoy your time here..

How to Join In
If you would like to participate in the life of the Museum, there are several
ways of doing so:
come to our public lectures, exhibitions and other events.
These are advertised in the McGill Reporter and in the newspapers. To find
out what's coming up, go to:
Making a donation.
The public program is not supported by the
university, and is made possible only by the generous donations of our supporters.
The collections that form the basis of our public exhibits, and also of teaching
and research at the Museum, are the accumulation of donations of objects over
the last hundred years, and their health and growth depend on a continuing stream
of donations.
To make a donation of money, write
to us at 859 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, H3A 2K6, or simply
deposit your gift in the box by the front door. All the money that we receive
in this way is dedicated to the public program and the collections. Cheques
should be made out to "McGill University / Redpath Museum". We issue
tax receipts for all gifts.
To make a donation of objects, it
is advisable to get in touch with the curator responsible for the collections
into which they fit:
Alternatively, you may call the Director
398-4086 ext. 3188, or
398-3185. We can accept collections only when they contribute
to the priorities that we have established, because our storage space and other
curatorial resources are limited. By accepting your collection, we accept responsibility
for maintaining and documenting it for the worldwide community of scholars.
When appropriate, donations of objects are valued by an outside specialist,
and we issue a tax receipt based on this evaluation.
The Friends of the Redpath Museum.
The most direct way of joining in Museum activities is to join the Friends of
the Redpath Museum. This is a group that exists to promote the public program
of the Museum. Its members help to organize fund-raising and publicity, act
as volunteers on Sunday afternoons, and participate in the evening lecture series.
Membership is open to all those interested in the activities of the Museum.
You can pick up an application form at the front desk or the Museum office,
or
398-4086.
Public Lectures and Seminars
A series of public lectures is organized by the Friends of the Redpath Museum
every year. They take place at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium - straight ahead
of you when you come in through the front door. These are advertised in the
McGill Reporter and in the newspapers.
Public Lectures are also sponsored by the Montreal Field Naturalists Club,
the Montreal Gem and Mineral Club, the Societé de Palaeontologie de
Montréal, and the Montreal Natural History Society at their regular
meetings at the Museum.

The Museum is open on Sunday afternoons for visits by individuals or families. Sunday afternoons are also a special time, because we offer a series of workshops at which young children can be introduced to science in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. There are two workshops each Sunday: 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for 4-6 year-olds, and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for 7-12 year-olds. We make a nominal charge to help towards expenses. The workshops are very popular, and it is necessary to book a place in advance. To make a reservation, or to ask for further information, call 398-4086 ext. 4092 between 9 a.m. and noon on the Wednesday or Thursday preceding your visit.
